**Andreeva Overcomes Nerves, Secures First Wimbledon Win Since Debut**
**LONDON** – Mirra Andreeva, the No. 7 seed, battled nerves and pressure to defeat Mayar Sherif 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of Wimbledon, marking her first victory at the prestigious tournament since her impressive debut run in 2023.
The 18-year-old Russian, who reached the last 16 in her first Wimbledon appearance, admitted to feeling “super, super nervous” ahead of the match, a stark contrast to her carefree attitude two years ago. After a quarterfinal heartbreaker to Lois Boisson at Roland Garros, and several other losses, Andreeva acknowledged the added expectation that came with her rising ranking and success on the WTA tour.
While she struggled with her serve in the first set, Andreeva found her rhythm in the second, improving her first-serve percentage and showcasing impressive net play and passing shots.
“I expect myself to win the matches now,” Andreeva said in her on-court interview, highlighting the shift in mindset.
Andreeva’s recent struggles followed a stellar spring season where she won WTA 1000 titles in Dubai and Indian Wells, propelling her into the Top 10. She credited her coach, Conchita Martínez, with helping her to reset after the French Open, acknowledging the challenges of dealing with losses week after week.
“We had a lot of talks and conversations,” Andreeva explained. “It’s not possible that you win every tournament. So you just learn how to deal with losses… I’m also making progress in that.”
Andreeva will face Lucia Bronzetti in the next round, who advanced with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Jil Teichmann. This win marks a significant step for Andreeva as she continues to navigate the pressures of being a rising star in the world of tennis.
