Wed Jul 02 08:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Riot Games Dives into TCG Market with “Riftbound,” a League of Legends Card Game

**Los Angeles, CA** – Following the global success of *League of Legends*, the animated series *Arcane*, and the virtual music group K/DA, Riot Games is expanding its reach with the upcoming physical Trading Card Game (TCG), *Riftbound*. Early access to the game suggests a promising translation of the popular MOBA into a strategic and engaging card game.

Game Director Dave Guskin has emphasized the goal of creating an “approachable” TCG that captures the essence of *League of Legends* champions. *Riftbound* features familiar card types, including Legend cards which dictate deck playstyles, units (creatures/characters), spells, gear (items), runes (mana), and unique battlefield cards. These battlefields represent lanes, similar to the MOBA. Players conquer them for points, adding a strategic layer of positioning and control.

Gameplay is reminiscent of TCGs with “leader” style game formats like *One Piece* or *Hearthstone*. However, *Riftbound* puts a twist on it, the Legend is not in combat and provides a passive or activated ability. The player can also choose a champion unit of the same name as your Legend to sit outside of your deck to be played whenever possible.

The game mechanics are easy to grasp, while offering strategic depth. Resource management, unit deployment, and battlefield control are key. Combat is streamlined, with a simple “Might” system for determining outcomes, while the “ganking” mechanic from the MOBA adds a unique element to unit movement and strategy.

*Riftbound* features six colors (domains): Red (Fury), Green (Calm), Blue (Mind), Orange (Body), Purple (Chaos), and Yellow (Order), each offering distinct playstyles. Deck brewing will allow players to personalize their strategies.

Matches are projected to be relatively quick, averaging under 25 minutes for experienced players. While *Riftbound* will launch in China this summer, a global release is planned for October. Riot aims for simultaneous global releases for future sets, but staggered releases may cause competitive imbalances.

With its familiar characters and accessible mechanics, *Riftbound* has the potential to resonate with both *League of Legends* fans and TCG enthusiasts. The game builds a solid foundation on the existing MOBA, making it accessible while capturing the essence of a strategic game.
