Wed Jul 02 14:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Key Dates & Security Measures Announced as India Prepares for Muharram 2025
**New Delhi, India -** The Islamic New Year, marked by the month of Muharram, began in India on Friday, June 27th, 2025, following the sighting of the crescent moon the previous evening. The Masjid-e-Nakhoda Markazi Rooyat-e-Hilal Committee confirmed the sighting, setting the stage for a month of religious observance for Muslims across the country.
The 10th day of Muharram, Ashura, will be observed on Sunday, July 6th, 2025. This day, a gazetted holiday in India, will see government offices, schools, banks, and stock exchanges, including the BSE and NSE, closed.
Muharram is considered the second holiest month in Islam after Ramadan. While both Sunni and Shia Muslims hold the month in high regard, it holds particular significance for Shia Muslims who commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala. Sunni Muslims observe Ashura with fasting, prayer, and charity, commemorating historical events such as the parting of the Red Sea for Prophet Moses.
Across India, Muharram is observed with deep reverence. Shia communities participate in majlis (gatherings), recitations of elegies, and processions, while Sunni Muslims typically observe voluntary fasting and special prayers.
Given the sensitive nature of the observances and the potential for large gatherings, authorities across India are taking heightened security measures, particularly in states like Uttar Pradesh. In Sambhal, over 900 individuals have been placed under preventive restrictions. DGP Rajeev Krishna has directed police units to deny permissions for new Muharram routes or unauthorised practices, banned weapon displays, and ordered strict CCTV and drone surveillance to ensure communal harmony.
Ashura, observed on July 6th, 2025, serves as a potent reminder of the values of sacrifice, justice, and unwavering faith.
