**Social Security Payments Slashed for Millions as SSA Recovers Overpayments**

Starting this month, approximately 2 million Americans face a significant reduction in their Social Security benefits as the Social Security Administration (SSA) begins recouping billions in overpaid funds. The SSA will withhold 50% of affected beneficiaries’ monthly checks until the overpayment is fully recovered.

These overpayments, which can occur due to unreported changes in income or SSA calculation errors, totaled an estimated $72 billion between 2015 and 2022. While improper payments represent less than 1% of total benefits paid, the SSA is legally obligated to reclaim the funds.

The move comes after a series of adjustments to the withholding rate. The Trump administration initially announced a 100% withholding, but after pushback, the rate was reduced to 50% starting in July, targeting overpayments made between 2015 and 2022.

Advocates for seniors express concern about the impact on vulnerable retirees. “For some retirees, it won’t matter if it’s 1% or 100%,” said Shannon Benton, executive director of the Senior Citizens League. “Any amount of clawback could be catastrophic.”

The SSA states that affected individuals should have received notification and have 90 days to appeal. Beneficiaries facing withholding have several options: repay the overpayment online or by mail, request a lower repayment rate by submitting Form SSA-634, or request a waiver if they believe the overpayment was not their fault or creates undue hardship. Individuals who disagree with the overpayment decision can request reconsideration.

For ongoing issues, individuals are encouraged to contact their congressional representatives’ Constituent Services staff for assistance.
