Tue Jul 01 17:50:00 UTC 2025: **Wimbledon Day One Marred by Curfew, Upsets, and Scorching Heat**

**LONDON** – Wimbledon’s first day of the 2025 Championships was a whirlwind of drama, high temperatures, and controversial endings, leaving fans both thrilled and frustrated. Several high ranked players were defeated in the men’s competition including Rune (8), Medvedev (9), Cerúndolo (16), and Tsitsipas (24).

The most contentious moment came as American Taylor Fritz (5) mounted a stunning comeback against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, clawing back from two sets down to level the match. However, the thrilling contest was abruptly halted due to the All England Club’s strict 11 p.m. curfew, a rule implemented to appease local residents. Spectators booed the decision as they anticipated an exciting 5th set to conclude the match.

Another match, between Alexander Zverev (3) and Arthur Rinderknech, was also suspended due to the curfew.

Earlier in the day, two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz battled to a five-set victory over veteran Fabio Fognini.

The scorching weather, with temperatures reaching 90F (32C), added another layer of challenge for players. Grounds staff worked to keep the grass courts hydrated, applying significant amounts of water.

Despite the late-night frustrations, the day offered the unique Wimbledon experience, with many attendees marveling at the tournament’s traditions, from the iconic ivy-covered walls of Centre Court to the sought-after Wimbledon towels.
