**Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu – July 1, 2025** – In an effort to monitor and regulate the transport of minerals, the Department of Geology and Mines in Tamil Nadu has announced a mandate requiring all vehicles transporting minerals from quarries, crushers, and stocking yards to be fitted with GPS equipment. The new regulation will come into effect on July 31st, 2025.

The directive was issued to quarry operators, traders, and truck operators from the southern districts of Tamil Nadu during a meeting held in Virudhunagar on Tuesday. Joint Director of Geology and Mining in Madurai, L. Sattanathan, reminded attendees that the mandate was previously announced in the State Assembly.

The requirement applies to vehicles operating in the districts of Madurai, Virudhunagar, Theni, Dindigul, Thoothukudi, Sivaganga, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Kanniyakumari, and Ramanathapuram.

In addition to GPS tracking, operators were also instructed to install weighing bridges on their premises. Assistant Director of Geology and Mining, C. Sugatharahima, and other officials were present at the meeting.

The move is expected to improve transparency and accountability in the mineral transport sector, helping to curb illegal mining activities and ensure proper record-keeping.
