**Coimbatore, July 1, 2025** – Coimbatore is on track to unveil its highly anticipated Semmozhi Poonga, a sprawling 45-acre botanical garden and recreational space, within the next 45 days. The Coimbatore Corporation reports that 80% of the ₹167.25-crore project, situated on the Central Prison Grounds in Gandhipuram, is now complete.
The first phase of the project includes 23 themed gardens, an experience center, an artificial waterfall, a cafeteria, and retail outlets. Progress on the botanical garden and related infrastructure is at 83%, matching the advancement of the 1,000-seat convention center, which will boast a conference hall and guest lounges. Pipelines for treated water and ground-level parking are already finalized.
Visitors can look forward to a 500-seat open-air theatre, a 4,000 sq. ft. terrarium, and parking for 453 cars, 10 buses, and 1,000 two-wheelers, including electric vehicle charging stations. Future additions include a 42-metre-high Ferris wheel and a one-kilometre zipline to be installed after the park’s inauguration.
Accessibility is a key consideration, with features such as battery-operated vehicles, wheelchairs, and audio-enabled glasses for visually impaired visitors. Information boards with QR codes and barcodes will provide detailed information about the plant species.
Principal Secretary Rajendra Ratnoo recently inspected the site, following a review on October 26, 2024, where the Corporation was instructed to finalize a Business and Operational Plan before the inauguration.
Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran expects the project to be fully completed within 45 days, promising a significant boost to the city’s recreational and tourism offerings.
