**Taipei, Taiwan** – Former Taipei Deputy Mayor Peng Chen-sheng broke down in court today after learning of his wife’s suicide. The news came as he was scheduled to testify in the ongoing 京華城 (Jing Hua City) corruption case, in which he and former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je are implicated.

Peng, visibly distraught, reportedly cried out “I am innocent! What have I done to deserve this?” and “How did this country become like this?”. Court proceedings were temporarily halted as Peng was escorted home by his brother after being deemed unfit to testify.

Police in Kaohsiung confirmed that Peng’s wife, a 72-year-old woman surnamed Hsieh, was found dead earlier this morning.

The 京華城 case centers around allegations of corruption and bribery involving Ko Wen-je and executives from the Wei Ching Group, including chairman Shen Ching-ching. Prosecutors have accused Ko of accepting bribes in exchange for favorable treatment in the development of the 京華城 site. Ko and Shen were also present in court today.

The Taipei District Court is currently reviewing recorded testimonies of Peng Chen-sheng, as well as other officials involved in the 京華城 project. The case continues to unfold with significant implications for the political landscape of Taipei.
