**Shimla, India -** Heavy monsoon rains lashing Himachal Pradesh have caused widespread devastation, including the dramatic collapse of a five-storey building in Shimla’s Bhattakufar area early Monday morning. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the building had been evacuated the previous night following a red alert issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
The building, already weakened by cracks attributed to nearby road construction, succumbed to the relentless downpour, a video of the collapse shared by DD News Himachal showed the structure crumble entirely.
Tragically, the severe weather has claimed three lives in the past 24 hours, bringing the state’s monsoon-related death toll to 20 since June 20th. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), fatalities included drownings in Una and Bilaspur, and a fall in Shimla district.
The torrential rains have also disrupted infrastructure, with 129 roads across the state currently closed, primarily in Sirmaur and Mandi districts. Power outages are widespread, with 612 transformers affected.
Adding to the chaos, a bridge near the Himuda Complex in Solan’s Barotiwala industrial area has been washed away, isolating several communities. Flooding in Baddi has inundated over 20 houses, with residents citing poor drainage as the root cause.
The IMD has issued warnings of moderate to high flash-flood risk for ten districts, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures. In Mandi, rising water levels in the Juni Khad and Beas rivers have led to warnings for residents to avoid riverbanks. The opening of spillway gates at the Pandoh dam due to flushing at the Larji dam has further swelled the Beas River.
In response to the red alert, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has ordered the closure of all schools in Kangra, Mandi, Solan and Sirmaur districts on Monday. Train services on the iconic Shimla-Kalka heritage rail line have been suspended due to landslides and fallen trees blocking the tracks.
