**SPMVV Celebrates National Statistics Day, Opens Data Science Center in Tirupati**
Tirupati, June 30, 2025 – Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVV) Department of Statistics celebrated the 19th National Statistics Day on Sunday, honoring the 133rd birth anniversary of Prashanth Chandra Mahalanobis, widely recognized as the ‘Father of Indian Statistics.’ The event, held in collaboration with the Indian Society for Probability and Statistics (ISPS) Data Science Centre, Tirupati, underscored the importance of statistics in the modern age.
ISPS honorary president Prof. P. Rajasekhara Reddy emphasized the need to cultivate interest in statistics among younger generations through the newly-established Data Science Centre. The center, set to offer courses beginning in the 2025-26 academic year, aims to become a hub for aspiring statisticians and provide consultancy services to applied researchers.
SPMVV Vice-Chancellor Prof. V. Uma, who inaugurated the Prof M. Mathai Self Study Library at the center, highlighted the indispensable role statistics plays across diverse research fields. US-based statistician and researcher Prof. Venkat Ikkurthy stressed the importance of a dedicated team of skilled statistical experts to tackle complex challenges in Machine Learning and contribute expertise to the field of Artificial Intelligence.
