**Venice, Italy** – Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Venice on Saturday, denouncing Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s lavish wedding celebrations amidst growing environmental concerns and socio-economic issues plaguing the historic city. The demonstrations coincided with the third day of the billionaire’s star-studded wedding festivities, estimated to cost millions.
Bezos and his bride, Lauren Sanchez Bezos, exchanged vows in a private ceremony on Friday on the secluded island of San Giorgio, attended by approximately 200 celebrity guests. However, the opulent event sparked outrage amongst some residents who feel the city is suffering from over-tourism, rising housing costs, and the escalating threat of climate-induced flooding.
Protesters carried banners with slogans like “Kisses Yes, Bezos No” and “No Bezos, no War,” directly targeting the billionaire and highlighting broader social and environmental grievances. One particularly pointed sign mocked Sanchez’s wedding attire, reading, “The planet is burning, but don’t worry, here’s the list of the 27 dresses of Lauren Sanchez.”
“We are here to continue ruining the plans of these rich people, who accumulate money by exploiting many other people… while the conditions of this city remain precarious,” explained Martina Vergnano, one of the demonstrators.
While Bezos reportedly donated 1 million euros ($1.17m) to each of three environmental research organizations working to preserve Venice, some locals dismissed the gesture as inadequate and insincere. “Those donations are just a misery and only aimed at clearing Bezos’ conscience,” stated Flavio Cogo, a resident who joined the protest.
Despite the unrest, Venetian businesses and political leaders, including Mayor Luigi Brugnaro, have largely welcomed the wedding, hailing it as a significant economic boost for the city. Brugnaro defended the event, stating that protesters were “in contradiction with the history of Venice, which is a history of relations, contacts and business.” He even went as far as to say, “Bezos embodies the Venetian mentality. He is more Venetian than the protesters,” expressing hope that Bezos would return to Venice for future business ventures.
The protests underscore the ongoing tensions in Venice, a city struggling to balance its rich history and tourism industry with the needs and concerns of its residents amidst a changing climate.
