**Uttarkashi, India – June 29, 2025 (8:36 AM IST)** – Approximately nine road construction labourers are feared missing after a cloudburst struck along the Yamunotri National Highway in Uttarkashi district early Sunday morning.
According to the Disaster Control Room, the labourers vanished amidst heavy rainfall and a cloudburst near Silai Bend in the Barkot area, a route leading to the Yamunotri temple.
Barkot police station SHO Deepak Kathait reported receiving information about the cloudburst around midnight. A search team dispatched to the scene discovered that the missing labourers had been living in tents erected for road construction work. Authorities suspect they were swept away by the intense deluge.
“So far, eight to nine people are reported missing. All of them are of Nepali origin,” Kathait stated, adding that a search operation is currently underway.
The Yamunotri National Highway is currently blocked at multiple points, including Silai Bend, due to the aftermath of the cloudburst.
Further reports indicate significant damage to agricultural land in Kuthnaur village due to the heavy rain. The road near Ojri is also severely damaged, and debris has inundated agricultural fields.
The Kupda Kunshala Trikhili motor bridge in Syanachatti is reportedly under threat, and the Yamuna River’s water level has risen considerably as a result of the heavy precipitation.
Authorities are continuing search and rescue efforts while assessing the full extent of the damage caused by the cloudburst and subsequent flooding.
