Sat Jun 28 16:51:41 UTC 2025: **Headline: Tamil Nadu Temple Embraces Mechanical Elephant for Humane Rituals**
**Aruppukottai, Tamil Nadu -** In a groundbreaking move for religious practices, two temples in Aruppukottai, Virudhunagar district, have welcomed “Gaja,” a life-sized mechanical elephant donated by People for Cattle in India (PFCI) and actress Trisha Krishnan. The Sri Ashtalinga Athisesha Selva Vinayagar and Sri Ashtabhuja Athisesha Varahi Amman Temples are the first in the Madurai region and Virudhunagar district to adopt this innovative, cruelty-free approach to temple ceremonies.
Unveiled by Additional Superintendent of Police Mathivanan during the auspicious Kumbabishekam festival, Gaja will participate in temple rituals, offering a humane alternative to using live elephants. PFCI facilitated the donation to recognize the temples commitment to abstain from owning or hiring elephants, reflecting a broader movement towards cruelty-free religious practices.
This initiative marks a significant step towards integrating technology with tradition, setting a precedent for compassionate worship in South India. Similar to the world’s first mechanical elephant, “Irinjadappilly Raman,” introduced in Kerala in 2023, Gaja represents a growing trend of temples adopting mechanical alternatives to uphold cultural practices while ensuring animal welfare. The move underscores a commitment to both religious tradition and ethical treatment of animals, potentially inspiring other temples to follow suit.
