Fri Jun 27 21:18:56 UTC 2025: ## Pakistan Floods Claim Lives as Monsoon Season Begins

**Islamabad, Pakistan** – Flash floods triggered by pre-monsoon rains have claimed the lives of at least nine people in northern Pakistan, with more fatalities reported in other rain-related incidents across the country. The tragic events unfolded as Pakistan braces for its annual monsoon season.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a devastating flash flood on the Swat River swept away an extended family of 16 who were picnicking near the water. District administrator Shehzad Mahboob confirmed that nine bodies have been recovered, all belonging to the same family. The incident occurred when children taking photos in the water were caught in the sudden surge, prompting relatives to rush to their aid. Sadly, they were overwhelmed by the deluge. Four family members remain missing, while four others were rescued.

“Our hearts go out to the families affected by this tragedy,” said Mahboob, urging residents and tourists to heed government warnings about potential flash floods.

Shah Fahad, a spokesperson for the provincial emergency service, stated that nearly 100 rescuers are engaged in the search for the missing individuals. He reiterated the importance of adhering to earlier warnings regarding possible flash floods in the Swat River, a popular tourist destination.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his condolences over the loss of life and has directed authorities to reinforce safety measures around rivers and streams.

Meanwhile, in eastern Punjab and southern Sindh provinces, at least 10 people have perished in rain-related incidents over the past 24 hours, according to rescue officials. Heavy rains have been battering various regions of Pakistan since the start of the week, causing road closures and damage to homes.

While weather forecasters predict less rainfall during this year’s monsoon season compared to the devastating floods of 2022, which resulted in 1,739 deaths, the recent events serve as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by heavy rains and flash floods as the monsoon season officially begins in July.
