**Colombo, Sri Lanka** – Pathum Nissanka’s masterful century and a formidable 194-run partnership with Dinesh Chandimal put Sri Lanka in a commanding position against Bangladesh on Day 2 of the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club. Sri Lanka ended the day at 290/2, a lead of 43 runs, after dismissing Bangladesh for 247 earlier in the day.
Nissanka remained unbeaten on 146 at stumps, showcasing his impressive form and cementing his place as a key figure in the Sri Lankan batting lineup. Chandimal, however, agonizingly fell short of his century, dismissed for 93 in the final session after a fluent and impactful innings.
Bangladesh, resuming at 220/8, struggled to add significantly to their overnight score. Asitha Fernando struck early, removing Ebadot Hossain (8). Taijul Islam provided some late resistance with a useful 33 before becoming debutant Sonal Dinusha’s third victim. Dinusha finished with impressive figures of 3-22.
Sri Lanka’s reply started strongly, with Nissanka and Lahiru Udara forging an 88-run opening stand. The pair handled both pace and spin with ease, finding the boundary regularly. Udara was eventually dismissed for 34, trapped LBW by Taijul Islam after a successful DRS review by Bangladesh.
However, the breakthrough proved to be a brief respite for the visitors. Nissanka and Chandimal then took control, building a massive partnership that deflated the Bangladesh bowlers. Nissanka reached his half-century before Chandimal joined the attack, hitting a towering six off Taijul.
Nissanka reached his century after being struck on his helmet by a bouncer from Rana. Chandimal continued to attack, but eventually fell to a reverse sweep off Nayeem Hasan, denying him a well-deserved century.
With fading light, the day ended with nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya surviving to the close after an edge off Mominul Haque went for four. Sri Lanka will look to build on their strong position and further extend their lead on Day 3.
