**Hingham’s South Shore Sports Center Destroyed in Overnight Fire**
HINGHAM, Mass. (CBS Boston) – A beloved community landmark, the South Shore Sports Center in Hingham, was razed by a devastating fire overnight. Flames erupted at the Recreation Park Drive facility shortly after 11 p.m. on Thursday, rapidly engulfing the building, particularly in the kitchen and dining area.
Firefighters battled the blaze for hours, but the extent of the damage was too great. “The building is a total loss,” confirmed Hingham Deputy Fire Chief David Levenson, speaking to reporters early Friday morning.
The South Shore Sports Center, a family-owned and operated establishment, has served the community for over 25 years, hosting countless sports leagues, birthday parties, and other events. “It’s been around for 25 years or more (for) soccer, basketball, baseball,” Levenson said. “Everything went on here. It’s going to be a loss for the community if they’re unable to rebuild.”
The building’s extensive damage has prevented investigators from entering the site to determine the fire’s origin and cause. Demolition of the complex is the next step, according to officials.
Residents are expressing their sadness over the loss of the cherished facility. “It’s just sad,” said Hingham resident Leeandria Mannion, who came to the site Friday morning. “That’s why I just felt I needed to come down here just to see because it had so many memories. Yeah, it’s tough.”
The South Shore Sports Center’s website states its mission is to provide the community with “a place to play, learn, and celebrate our love of sports.” The loss of this vital resource is a significant blow to the Hingham community.
