Cudahy, CA – Vice Mayor Cynthia Gonzalez is under fire after posting a controversial video on social media that appeared to call on Los Angeles street gangs to organize in response to recent immigration sweeps in Southern California.
In the now-deleted video, Gonzalez questioned the absence of gang activity, saying, “I want to know where all the cholos are at in Los Angeles… you guys tag everything up, claiming hood, and now that your hood’s being invaded by the biggest gang there is, there ain’t a peep out of you.” She specifically mentioned gangs like Florencia 13 and 18th Street.
The video sparked immediate outrage, with critics accusing Gonzalez of inciting violence against federal immigration agents. The Los Angeles Police Protective League called for her resignation and possible prosecution, citing concerns for officer safety, and noting past murders of officers by members of the mentioned gangs.
Federal authorities and law enforcement groups have condemned the video. The Department of Homeland Security labeled her comments as “despicable,” while the FBI has neither confirmed nor denied an investigation, while condemning any calls for violence against law enforcement.
Gonzalez’s attorney issued a statement claiming her client’s words were intended as a call for peaceful demonstrations, not violence. “In her post, Dr. Gonzalez issued a challenge to the Latino community: join the thousands of Angelenos already peacefully organizing in response to ongoing enforcement actions,” the statement reads. “Importantly, Dr. Gonzalez in no way encouraged anyone to engage in violence.”
The city of Cudahy released a statement clarifying that Gonzalez’s views do not reflect the official position of the city.
