Thu Jun 26 14:42:12 UTC 2025: ## News Article: Mettur Dam Discharges Increased as Inflows Surge
**Salem, June 26, 2025 (The Hindu) -** Authorities in Salem, Tamil Nadu, have significantly increased the water discharge from the Mettur Dam into the River Cauvery for delta irrigation. As of Thursday evening, the outflow was raised to 22,500 cusecs due to a substantial surge in inflow into the Stanley Reservoir.
The increased inflow is a direct result of heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the Mettur Dam and the release of surplus water from the Kabini and KRS dams in neighboring Karnataka. Data released by the Water Resources Department (WRD) indicates that the inflow reached 37,263 cusecs by 4 p.m. Thursday, up from 13,332 cusecs the previous day.
The dam’s water level currently stands at 113.05 feet, nearing its full capacity of 120 feet. The storage level is at 82.81 TMC, compared to a full capacity of 93.47 TMC.
“For the past few days, inflow into the Mettur dam has been increasing gradually,” a WRD official stated. “At present, more than 60,000 cusecs of surplus water was discharged from the dams in Karnataka. The water has started to reach the dam and by Friday, inflow is expected to increase further. Based on the inflow and water demand in the delta region, the amount of water discharged from the dam will be increased.”
The surge in water levels has also impacted tourism at Hogenakkal Falls in Dharmapuri district. The district administration has implemented a ban on bathing in the falls and coracle rides due to the increased water flow, prioritizing the safety of visitors.
