**Redmond, WA -** Despite widespread layoffs at Microsoft this year, including a significant cut of 6,000 employees in May, one former employee is choosing to return to the office. Freddy Kristiansen, a 59-year-old former principal product manager, was laid off after 23 years with the tech giant, but remains committed to his colleagues and the products he helped develop.
Kristiansen, who joined Microsoft in 2002 through the acquisition of Navision, is currently serving his notice period as mandated by Danish employment law. “It might sound strange to show up at the office after being let go, but I still feel committed,” Kristiansen told Business Insider. “I still have an office access card and my company laptop, at the latest until December when I’m officially terminated. In the meantime, I’m still keen to be helpful.”
During his tenure, Kristiansen held various roles and recently contributed to AL-Go for GitHub, a tool designed to simplify DevOps practices for Microsoft partners. While acknowledging the impact of the layoffs on some colleagues, Kristiansen expressed a sense of relief at the opportunity to pursue long-held personal goals. “Some of my colleagues were devastated. They are worried about what the future might hold. But I’m nearing 60… It felt like the right time to finally pursue my long-overdue dream of doing work on my own terms,” he stated.
This news comes as Microsoft is reportedly planning further job cuts in July, primarily targeting the sales division and customer-facing roles, signaling a continued restructuring effort within the company. The company had indicated plans to use third-party firms to handle more software sales to small and mid-sized customers earlier in April.
