NEW YORK – Krispy Kreme and McDonald’s announced Tuesday that they are ending their doughnut partnership, effective July 2nd. The collaboration, which began in March 2024 with the intention of selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts at McDonald’s locations across the U.S. by the end of 2026, ultimately proved unsustainable for the doughnut maker.

“Ultimately, efforts to bring our costs in line with unit demand were unsuccessful, making the partnership unsustainable for us,” said Krispy Kreme CEO Josh Charlesworth in a statement. The company had paused the nationwide rollout last month as it reassessed the deployment schedule.

McDonald’s acknowledged the termination, stating that while the partnership met their expectations and provided a “great, high-quality product,” it needed to be a profitable venture for Krispy Kreme as well. “We had strong collaboration with Krispy Kreme…and while the partnership met our expectations for McDonald’s and Owner/Operators, this needed to be a profitable business model for Krispy Kreme as well,” said Alyssa Buetikofer, McDonald’s USA’s chief marketing and customer experience officer.

Krispy Kreme now plans to focus on future growth through high-volume retail points and international franchise expansion. Charlesworth noted that demand fell below expectations after the initial launch, requiring intervention.

McDonald’s downplayed the impact of the partnership’s dissolution, stating that Krispy Kreme represented a small part of its breakfast business.
