**Shastri Warns Against Resting Bumrah, Says India Could Face 2-0 Deficit Against England**
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has cautioned against resting Jasprit Bumrah for the second Test match against England, warning that the Shubman Gill-led side could find themselves in a 2-0 hole in the five-match series.
Speaking to Sky Sports Cricket, Shastri referenced Bumrah’s earlier statement that he would only play three of the five Tests, speculating that the pacer might be rested for the upcoming match at Edgbaston with an eye on playing at Lord’s.
“Bumrah said he’ll play three Test matches. Now, which of the three he’ll play, that’s another question to be asked,” Shastri said. “I think if he takes a break, it’ll be the next one, because he’ll definitely want to play at Lord’s, right? …It could be 2-0 down. So that is the problem. I think he has got to play.”
Following India’s defeat in the first Test, Shastri emphasized the urgency for a strong comeback in the second match. He highlighted India’s recent Test series losses against New Zealand and Australia, stating that another series loss against England could be detrimental.
“It will be a tough pill to swallow…we lost 3-0 against New Zealand, lost a series in Australia. Now, this is a tough series,” Shastri stated. “You had your opportunity to go one up here…and you’ve blown it. And now it’s catch-up time.” He urged the team to show “real character” and deliver a “knockout punch” in the next Test to avoid falling further behind. He said if India don’t “counter punch,” the team must realize they must be ready.
