**Underground Power Cables Installed in Tirunelveli Ahead of ‘Aani’ Festival**
**TIRUNELVELI, June 26, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) has announced the completion of underground power cable installation along the four Car Streets surrounding the Swami Nellaiyappar Gandhimathi Ambal Temple in Tirunelveli. This infrastructure upgrade comes in anticipation of the ‘Aani’ car festival scheduled for July 8, 2025.
Previously, Tangedco would need to temporarily cut off power supply to these streets and reconnect the cables each time the temple car passed to ensure public safety. The underground cabling will eliminate this cumbersome process.
“While we will still need to temporarily halt power during the car procession due to safety concerns regarding individuals climbing electric poles, the need to physically reconnect cables after the car passes each street is now eliminated,” said a senior Tangedco official. “We can simply switch the power back on.”
Regional Chief Engineer Chandra oversaw the final inspection of the underground cabling system, including a mock power restoration procedure.
In addition to the power infrastructure upgrades, the local police are installing new CCTV cameras along the Car Streets and erecting watchtowers at strategic locations. These security measures will allow the police to monitor the crowds from a dedicated control room during the festival. The Corporation is also expected to commence road-laying work in the near future.
