Chennai, India – June 26, 2025 – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to refurbish and upgrade the kennels and cages at its three Animal Birth Control (ABC) centers in Pulianthope, Lloyds Colony, and Kannammapet. The project, estimated at ₹3.91 crore, aims to improve the living conditions for stray dogs undergoing sterilization and immunization as part of the Chennai-Care for Animals Project (C-CAP).
The renovation will provide a total of 460 stainless steel kennels across the three centers: 140 each in Pulianthope and Kannamapettai, and 180 at the Lloyds Road center. Specific contracts include ₹74.52 lakh for Kannammapet in Kodambakkam Zone (X), ₹1.76 crore for Pulianthope in Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar Zone, and ₹1.41 crore for Lloyds Colony in Teynampet Zone (IX). Each contract has a six-month completion timeline.
The upgrade comes in response to a significant increase in Chennai’s street dog population, which a survey by Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS) in September 2024 revealed to be 1.8 lakh, a substantial jump from 57,366 in 2021. The survey also indicated that Ambattur Zone (VII) has the highest number of street dogs, while Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar Zone (VI) has the highest density per kilometer.
GCC data as of April 22, 2025, showed that 6,194 dogs had been captured, with 5,661 successfully sterilized. The refurbishment project underscores the GCC’s commitment to managing the street dog population humanely and effectively.
