**Kamakhya Temple Doors Reopen After Ambubachi Mela, Drawing Devotees and Promoting Menstrual Hygiene Awareness**
**Guwahati, Assam – June 26, 2025:** After four days of closure for the annual Ambubachi Mela, the doors of the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati reopened to devotees at 6 am today. The mela, held during what is believed to be the goddess Kamakhya’s annual menstrual cycle, is a significant religious event that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to Assam each year.
The Ambubachi Mela is unique in its celebration of menstruation, with temple priests noting it as a reason why the taboo surrounding menstruation is less prevalent in Assam compared to other parts of India. The festival also aims to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene, aligning with the state’s cultural tradition of celebrating a girl’s attainment of womanhood with the “Tuloni Biya” ritual.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his wishes for the welfare of the nation upon the temple’s reopening, stating in a post on X, “As the doors of Maa Kamakhya open to devotees in Nibritti…I pray to Maa Kamakhya for the welfare of Bharat. May Maa Kamakhya bless everyone with abundance and steer the civilization forward.”
The Kamakhya Temple, located atop Nilachal Hills, is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths, each representing a body part of the goddess Sati. The temple’s sanctum houses a rock symbolizing the yoni, the female genital.
