**Hyderabad, June 25, 2025** – The annual Bonalu festival, a significant religious and cultural event in Telangana, is set to commence, bringing vibrant festivities to Hyderabad and surrounding regions. Celebrated during the Telugu month of Ashadam, Bonalu is a month-long festival honoring the goddess Mahankali, with each week dedicated to different temples across the state.

Bonalu, derived from the Telugu word “Bhojanam” (meal), is an offering of cooked rice, milk, and jaggery presented to the goddess by devotees as a gesture of gratitude and devotion. Women carry these offerings in decorated pots on their heads to the temples, accompanied by traditional drumbeats and the vibrant energy of the community.

The festival’s origins are believed to date back to the Kakatiya dynasty, with the first Bonalu celebrations held at the Jagadambika Temple in Golconda. The tradition has continued through the centuries, with significant celebrations also taking place at the Balkampet Yellamma Temple, the Ujjaini Mahankali Temple in Secunderabad, and the Lal Darwaza Mahankali Temple.

A unique aspect of Bonalu is the “Rangam,” or oracle reading, where a woman believed to be possessed by the goddess foretells the future, offering insights into the upcoming monsoon and guidance for the well-being of the people.

The festival also features “Pothurajus,” men who dance energetically with whips, symbolizing the deity’s protectors. Animal sacrifices are also part of some Bonalu traditions, reflecting the diverse customs and beliefs of the community.

Bonalu is a source of pride for the Telugu community, showcasing their rich cultural heritage to the world. While the rituals and beliefs are deeply rooted in tradition, organizers urge attendees to approach the festival with respect and understanding, acknowledging the varying degrees of scientific evidence behind certain practices.

The city is preparing for an influx of devotees, with elaborate arrangements in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.
