**HOLLYWOOD, CA -** Michael Cera, known for his roles in “Superbad” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” revealed that he declined an opportunity to star in the Harry Potter spin-off franchise, “Fantastic Beasts.” The actor shared the news on Louis Theroux’s podcast, stating that the long-term commitment and potential for heightened fame led him to pass on the project.
Cera said he believed the role would have involved a commitment of “probably six years or something.” He added, “I did sort of make a conscientious choice to limit my exposure a little bit, or just try and be a little more in control of it. And I felt like doing, especially little kids’ movies, I had a big fear of doing things that I would get too famous.”
While Cera didn’t specify which role he was considered for, speculation is rife online. Some suggest he may have been in contention for the lead role of Newt Scamander, ultimately played by Eddie Redmayne, or the part of Scamander’s American companion, Jacob Kowalski.
Despite his past reservations, Cera indicated he’d be more open to joining a major franchise now. “If a franchise came along now and seemed interesting, I don’t think on the grounds of it being a franchise I would storm out of the office or anything.”
The “Fantastic Beasts” franchise, currently paused after three films, is now overshadowed by Warner Bros.’ plans for a big-budget HBO TV series adaptation of the original “Harry Potter” books. Casting announcements for the series have already begun, but there is no indication of Cera’s involvement.
