**Mumbai, India** – The upcoming Punjabi film “Sardaar Ji 3,” starring Diljit Dosanjh, will not be released in India following online criticism surrounding the casting of Pakistani actress Hania Aamir. The film’s trailer, released on Sunday, sparked controversy due to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025.
Indian film bodies, including the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), called for a ban on the film, urging the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to deny certification due to the inclusion of Pakistani actors.
Dosanjh, who also serves as a producer on the film, addressed the backlash in an interview with BBC Asian Network. He explained that “Sardaar Ji 3” was filmed in February when relations between the two countries were stable. “When this film was made, everything was fine. We shot it in February and things were okay back then,” Dosanjh stated.
Following the Pahalgam attack, producers decided to release the film only in overseas markets. “After that, a lot of big things happened that were beyond our control. So the producers decided that the film obviously won’t be released in India now, so they’ll release it overseas. The producers have invested a lot of money, and when the film was being made, nothing like this was happening,” Dosanjh added. He also expressed his support for the producer’s decision, acknowledging the financial loss incurred by excluding the Indian market.
Dosanjh also praised Hania Aamir’s professionalism, stating he respected her work and privacy. “Sardaar Ji 3” is slated for an international release this Friday.
