**Chennai, June 23, 2025** – Members of the People’s Awareness Association of Chromepet staged a “Black Flag Protest” on Sunday, demanding immediate action from the Highways Department regarding the long-defunct escalator on the foot overbridge connecting the Chromepet bus shelter and the railway station.
Carrying black flags and wearing black badges, residents and activists expressed their frustration over the eight-month delay in repairing or replacing the escalator. Social activist V. Santhanam stated, “Today’s protest is to urge the Highways Department to repair or install a new escalator as soon as possible.”
The association highlighted the significant difficulties the broken escalator poses for senior citizens, passengers with heavy luggage, and people with disabilities, making their daily commute unnecessarily burdensome. Protesters emphasized that the escalator’s disuse, now covered in dust, has become a significant inconvenience for the community.
