Mon Jun 23 07:38:51 UTC 2025: ## Deadly Russian Strikes Hit Kyiv as Tensions Escalate
**Kyiv, Ukraine** – At least six people have been killed and multiple others wounded in a “massive” Russian missile and drone attack targeting residential areas across Kyiv and the surrounding region on Monday morning, Ukrainian officials report. This marks the second major overnight assault on the capital this week, intensifying fears and raising concerns about a potential escalation of the conflict.
“Another massive attack on the capital. Possibly, several waves of enemy drones,” stated Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, accusing Russia of deliberately targeting civilian areas. Residential buildings, hospitals, sports facilities, and even the entrance of a metro station being used as a bomb shelter were reportedly struck during the large-scale attack.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed that six of Kyiv’s ten districts sustained damage, with at least 10 people wounded. “At least four people were killed in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district, where the entire entrance of a residential high-rise building was destroyed,” Klymenko said, adding that rescue efforts are underway to find people trapped under the rubble.
The attacks extend beyond Kyiv. A Russian drone strike in the Chernihiv region on Sunday killed two people and injured 10, including three children. Furthermore, one person was killed and eight wounded overnight in Bila Tserkva, southwest of Kyiv.
While Russia has remained silent on the specific strikes, both sides routinely deny targeting civilians. However, the United Nations has documented thousands of civilian deaths in Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022, with the vast majority being Ukrainian.
The recent escalation comes on the heels of last week’s devastating attack on Kyiv, which saw hundreds of drones unleashed, resulting in 28 deaths and over 150 injuries.
In response to the increased attacks, Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrskii, has vowed to intensify strikes on Russian military targets. “We will increase the scale and depth” of our attacks, Syrskii stated, signaling a shift towards a more offensive strategy.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian forces launched at least 47 drones and fired three missiles overnight on Sunday.
Kyiv has accused Moscow of deliberately sabotaging peace deal efforts, potentially prolonging the conflict and seizing more territory. The attacks come as international attention is diverted by the United States’s decision to join Israel’s escalating air campaign against Iran.
