**Metallica’s “Mama Said” Almost Never Was: Hetfield Reveals Intimate Origins**

**[City, State] –** A newly unearthed 1996 interview with Metallica frontman James Hetfield has revealed the surprising origins of the band’s ballad, “Mama Said,” from their 1996 album *Load*. The interview, unearthed by YouTube channel ‘TMF – The Music Factory,’ details how the deeply personal song, penned and originally performed solely by Hetfield on acoustic guitar, was never intended for release.

Hetfield describes the song as a product of road-induced boredom and introspection, initially comparing it to their megahit “Nothing Else Matters”, and written “for me: just out on the road, being bored, being in your hotel room. It wasn’t really for others to hear. It was some real personal stuff.” However, his bandmates recognized the raw emotion and potential within the track.

“They saw something there, something real from deep inside,” Hetfield explained in the interview. “It was pretty heavy, meaning-wise. So, we worked on it and turned it into a Metallica song. It wasn’t originally supposed to be one.”

“Mama Said” delves into Hetfield’s complex relationship with his mother, a Christian Scientist who passed away from cancer when he was 16. The lyrics explore feelings of discord and regret.

Released as a single on November 25, 1996, “Mama Said” achieved success in Europe, topping the UK Rock & Metal chart and reaching number 19 on the UK Singles chart. Despite its popularity, Metallica has never performed the song live as a band, with only two solo acoustic performances by Hetfield in 1996.

The revelation comes as Metallica recently reissued *Load* on June 13 in expansive boxsets. The remastered album, with almost 300 tracks, includes previously unreleased demos, edits, and live versions from the era, remastered by Reuben Cohen. Lead guitarist Kirk Hammett recently expressed interest in exploring the bluesier sound of *Load* in future Metallica projects.
