**Las Vegas, NV** – The highly anticipated heavyweight title unification bout between UFC champion Jon Jones and interim titleholder Tom Aspinall remains unsigned, fueling speculation and frustration among fans. While UFC CEO Dana White has threatened to move on if the fight isn’t finalized soon, analyst Din Thomas believes the delay is a calculated marketing strategy by Jones and the UFC.
“I think all this nonsense is just marketing,” Thomas told MMA Junkie. “I think it’s marketing to keep it out there, to make it even bigger.” He points to the consistent discussion surrounding the potential fight, even overshadowing actual scheduled bouts, as evidence of a deliberate tactic to build hype.
Jones’ recent comments expressing apathy towards the fight have drawn criticism and accusations of “ducking” Aspinall. However, Thomas argues this is all part of the plan. “I think Jon Jones is going to fight. He has to. There’s no way he goes this route, does all this, and then not fight.”
According to Thomas, strategically delaying the announcement keeps fans engaged and the fight relevant. “If the plan was to have them fight in November or December, and we announced it in February, no one would talk about it until then,” he explained. The back-and-forth between Jones and Aspinall, with the constant will-they-won’t-they dynamic, serves to dangle the carrot of a mega-fight in front of the audience.
Thomas predicts the fight will ultimately be signed, positioning it as a major UFC event to close out the year. Whether Jones’ hesitation is genuine or a carefully orchestrated marketing ploy remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the longer the delay, the bigger the anticipation.
