**China Implements National Internet ID, Raising Surveillance Concerns**

Beijing – China is set to implement a national internet ID system, a move that experts warn will further tighten the government’s already extensive control over online activity. The new system, slated to take effect in mid-July, will provide users with a state-issued virtual ID for seamless login across various social media platforms and websites.

The Chinese government claims the initiative aims to “protect citizens’ identity information and support the healthy and orderly development of the digital economy.” However, critics argue that the centralized system will significantly erode online freedom of expression and create a “digital totalitarianism,” enabling real-time monitoring and censorship of user activity across the entire internet.

The finalized rules were unveiled after a public consultation period, during which the proposal faced criticism from law professors, human rights experts, and internet users. Experts fear that the new system will provide the government with unprecedented power to track users’ digital trails.

Despite concerns, Chinese state media has lauded the internet ID as a “bullet-proof vest for personal information,” claiming it will reduce the risk of data leaks. According to state-run media, over six million people have already registered for the ID. The government insists that participation is voluntary, yet encourages industries and sectors to integrate with the system.

Experts warn that the voluntary nature of the system may evolve into a de facto requirement, and also raise concerns about the increased risks of data breaches due to the centralized collection of personal information. They point to previous incidents, such as the 2022 leak of a police database containing personal information of one billion citizens, as evidence of the potential vulnerabilities.
