**Hyderabad, June 20, 2025** – Cherlapally Tank, a 58-acre water body in Kapra mandal, Medchal Malkajgiri district, is slated for a major redevelopment aimed at transforming it into a popular tourist and recreational spot. The Hyderabad Disaster Response & Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) is spearheading the initiative, exploring the use of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds to bring the project to fruition.
HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath visited the lake yesterday, following an invitation from Director General of Prisons Soumya Mishra. The two officials discussed potential improvements to the lake, including fencing, strengthening the bund, and building a pathway. Plans also include the installation of solar lighting and CCTV cameras to enhance safety and security, as well as strategies to ensure a consistent supply of fresh water.
“We envision Cherlapally Lake as a valuable community asset,” stated Ranganath. “The development will not only enhance its aesthetic appeal but also provide recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.”
The project will incorporate a 3-kilometer walking track around the lake, complete with mini parks, trees, and seating areas. HYDRAA is tasked with preparing a detailed project report outlining the necessary works and associated costs.
Mishra highlighted the willingness of local industries in the Cherlapally industrial area to contribute funds towards the lake’s development. The water body currently receives surplus water from several interconnected lakes and has a sewage diversion channel.
The initiative comes amid concerns about encroachment on water bodies in Hyderabad. According to recent reports, 396 out of 920 lakes in the city have been encroached upon. HYDRAA has been actively working to combat illegal encroachment, including recent actions to reclaim land at Masab Lake and other locations. HYDRAA will sign an MoU with NRSC to identify lake encroachments. The Cherlapally Lake redevelopment project is expected to improve the quality of life in the area, as well as protect the integrity of the water body.
