**Congress Slams Modi’s Foreign Trip, Accuses PM of Lacking “Empathy” for Manipur**
**New Delhi – June 15, 2025** – As Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on a three-nation tour of Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia, the Congress party is criticizing his priorities, accusing him of neglecting the ongoing crisis in Manipur.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh issued a statement today, highlighting Modi’s enthusiasm for foreign travel – what he termed the “3 Es” of energy, excitement, and enthusiasm – while questioning his lack of empathy for the people of Manipur. “This is Mr. Modi’s 35th trip abroad since May 2023,” Ramesh stated. “He has all the energy, excitement, and enthusiasm–the 3 Es– for such visits. But can he not summon up a 4th E–empathy– for going to Manipur where the people’s distress, agony and suffering continues unabated?”
Ramesh pointed out that the Prime Minister has not met with anyone from Manipur, including political leaders, since the ethnic conflict began in May 2023. He described the PM’s treatment of Manipur as “pathetic”.
The criticism comes amid ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo communities, which has claimed over 220 lives and displaced thousands.
Ramesh also took aim at Modi’s earlier remarks regarding India-Canada relations, accusing the Prime Minister of being “exposed” for accepting an invitation to the G7 Summit in Canada after previously appearing hesitant. He further questioned Modi’s boasting of India’s economic status, referencing conflicting reports on India’s ranking in the global economy.
Prime Minister Modi’s itinerary includes a visit to Cyprus at the invitation of President Nikos Christodoulides, followed by participation in the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, and an official visit to Croatia at the invitation of Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic. The Congress party continues to press the Prime Minister for a response to the situation in Manipur and has repeatedly criticized the central government’s handling of the crisis.
