Montreal – Mercedes’ George Russell secured pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix in a nail-biting qualifying session, edging out Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by the narrowest of margins. Russell’s blistering final lap, set on medium tyres, saw him clock the fastest time, relegating Verstappen to second on the grid.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri will start third after a strong showing, followed by Mercedes’ rookie Kimi Antonelli in an impressive fourth. Lewis Hamilton secured fifth position, with Fernando Alonso rounding out the top six.

Title contender Lando Norris had a disappointing session and will start seventh, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc could only manage eighth. Yuki Tsunoda will start at the back of the grid due to a penalty.

The stage is set for a fierce battle on Sunday, with Russell and Verstappen locking horns on the front row, reigniting their rivalry after a recent clash in Spain. Russell will be aiming for his and Mercedes’ first victory of the 2025 season, but he faces a tough challenge from Verstappen and the chasing pack.
