**Ahmedabad, India** – A devastating plane crash at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday has claimed the lives of 251 people. Air India flight AI 171, a London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff at approximately 1:30 PM.
Of the 242 people on board, 241 perished, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. A UK national is the sole survivor. The aircraft’s tail section impacted the hostel mess at BJ Medical College in Meghaninagar, resulting in the deaths of 10 individuals, including four medical students.
Shortly after takeoff, the pilot issued a ‘Mayday’ distress call. The aircraft reportedly lost altitude before crashing and erupting in flames.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site, and the central government has formed a high-level committee to investigate the incident, according to Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu. The plane’s black box has been recovered, which is expected to provide crucial information about the cause of the crash.
