**THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, June 13, 2025** – Kerala University hosted a significant networking event today in collaboration with the EU-India Trade and Technology Council (TTC), paving the way for stronger research collaborations in critical areas like marine pollution and renewable energy. The event focused on a proposed €41 million (₹394 crore) joint initiative designed to bolster research partnerships between Indian and European institutions.
The visiting TTC delegation engaged in detailed discussions with university faculty and experts to explore collaborative opportunities. A key focus was the €21 million (₹200 crore) marine pollution project, co-funded by Horizon Europe and India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).
Discussions centered around identifying key contact points within EU research organizations, exploring cutting-edge technological interventions for detecting marine pollutants, and promoting comprehensive research aimed at improving ocean health.
Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) Vice-Chancellor in-charge Biju Kumar A. chaired the meeting, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in tackling pressing global challenges. Presentations were delivered by key officials from the EU Delegation to India and MoES, offering insights into the scope and potential of the joint initiative.
The event saw participation from experts representing a diverse range of institutions, including Kerala University, KUFOS, Mahatma Gandhi University, the National Centre for Earth Science Studies, the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management, and the Nansen Environmental Research Centre (India). The Department of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries at Kerala University hosted the event.
This initiative signals a significant step towards strengthening scientific cooperation between India and the European Union, leveraging expertise and resources to address critical environmental and technological challenges.
