**India Protests Treatment of National at Newark Airport; U.S. Stands Firm on Immigration Laws**
**New Delhi, June 11, 2025** – The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has raised concerns with the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi regarding the treatment of an Indian national at Newark Liberty International Airport. The incident, which involved the man being handcuffed and allegedly treated “like a criminal,” has sparked outrage in India after videos of the event circulated widely on social media.
According to official sources, the individual, identified as hailing from Haryana, entered the U.S. illegally without a valid visa. The Indian Consulate in New York has confirmed that the man was being deported back to India under a court order.
The MEA has been in communication with the U.S. authorities, and the Indian Embassy in Washington D.C. and the Consulate in New York are seeking further details surrounding the incident. The Consulate said that during his transit in Newark, on finding his behaviour not conducive for travel, he was restrained and admitted to a medical facility. Once he is fit to travel, the individual will be deported to India
The U.S. Embassy responded late on June 10 with a tweet emphasizing that the U.S. “will not tolerate abuse of visas and violation of U.S. law.” The statement reiterated that while the United States welcomes legitimate travelers, there is “no right to visit the United States” and that illegal entry will not be tolerated.
The incident was reportedly filmed by an Indian-American, Kunal Jain, who expressed feeling “helpless and heartbroken” witnessing the events.
The situation remains under scrutiny, with the Indian Consulate in New York continuing to engage with U.S. authorities on the matter. This incident highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding immigration laws and enforcement between the two countries.
