Thu Jun 12 20:23:20 UTC 2025: **Headline: Kashmir Valley Connected to Rest of India via Rail Link, Promises Economic Boost and National Integration**

**Srinagar, June 13, 2025** – After decades of planning and overcoming formidable engineering challenges, the Kashmir Valley is now directly connected to the rest of India via the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Vande Bharat Express between Srinagar and Katra on June 6th, marking a significant milestone in national integration and promising to boost trade, tourism, and economic growth in the region.

The 272-km rail link, declared a national project in 2008 and funded by the Central government, features impressive feats of engineering, including the Anji bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, and the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world’s highest railway arch bridge.

For residents like apple orchardists Abid and Khursheed Dar, the new rail line offers hope and improved access to medical care. The journey from Srinagar to Katra, previously a grueling 24 hours, has been reduced to 13 hours. Commuters are also seeing a safer passage as highways remained closed for 20.5 days (488 hours) in 2024 and 58 days (1,392 hours) in 2023, and up to 1,750 people have died on the highway between 2010 and 2020.

The rail line is expected to revolutionize the region’s economy. Izhan Javed, an apple dealer, anticipates refrigerated goods trains will provide crucial access to southern markets currently dominated by imports. The tourism sector is also poised for growth, with expectations of increased tourist footfall and new opportunities for local youth.

Despite the optimism, concerns remain regarding security and the affordability of the refrigerated train for small farmers.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the strategic importance of the rail link, providing all-weather connectivity to border regions. He highlighted the project’s resilience, designed to withstand extreme weather and seismic activity.

As the Vande Bharat Express traverses the breathtaking Himalayan landscape, passengers express excitement and hope for a brighter future. National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah noted that the rail line represents the first step towards reducing the “gulf of hearts” and fostering greater national unity. The new railway will benefit tourism, trade and travel in the area and open doors for the next generation.
