Thu Jun 12 14:31:02 UTC 2025: ## Visakhapatnam Zoo Celebrates Births of Rare Mouse Deer and Red-Necked Wallaby

**Visakhapatnam, India – June 12, 2025** – The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) in Visakhapatnam is celebrating a conservation success, announcing the births of a mouse deer and a red-necked wallaby within the zoo’s premises.

The birth of the mouse deer, also known as the Indian Chevrotain, is particularly significant. This elusive and shy species, the smallest deer in the deer family, plays a vital role in the forest ecosystem as a seed disperser and prey for carnivores. Listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act (1972) due to hunting, its conservation is a priority.

“These new births are an achievement and a testament to our team’s dedication, hard work and expertise in animal care and breeding programme,” said Curator G. Mangamma. The IGZP continues to focus on conservation breeding programs and wildlife protection, striving to provide a safe and naturalistic habitat for the animals in its care.

Zoo authorities confirmed that both newborns are under close supervision and will soon be visible to the public as they grow and adapt to their environment. This success highlights the IGZP’s commitment to wildlife conservation and breeding, offering hope for the future of these fascinating species.
