**Red Alert Issued as Heavy Rains Lash Karnataka Districts**

Shivamogga, India – June 12, 2025 – A heavy downpour wreaked havoc across Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan districts in Karnataka on Thursday, disrupting daily life and causing widespread damage. Uprooted trees, flooded low-lying areas, and hazardous road conditions were reported throughout the affected regions.

The Malnad region experienced significantly higher than average rainfall, recording 21.9 mm in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am Thursday, compared to the normal 9.5 mm. Shivamogga district saw an average of 40.9 mm of rainfall, far exceeding its usual 14 mm. Specific areas like Hosanagar, Sagar, and Tirthahalli taluks within Shivamogga were particularly hard hit.

Chikkamagaluru district also experienced a surge in rainfall, with an average of 20.9 mm against the normal 7.4 mm. In response, the India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the district for the next two days. Citing the severe weather forecast, the Chikkamagaluru Deputy Commissioner declared a holiday for Anganwadis (rural childcare centers) in Koppa, Kalasa, Mudigere, Chikkamagaluru, Sringeri, and N.R. Pura taluks for Friday and Saturday.

Hassan district recorded 9 mm of rainfall, exceeding its normal 4.3 mm. The inflow into local reservoirs is steadily increasing, leading to swelling rivers and streams, raising concerns about potential flooding in the coming days.
