**Shillong, Meghalaya** – A honeymoon trip has turned into a nightmare as Meghalaya police unravel a chilling murder plot orchestrated by a newlywed wife against her husband. Sonam Raghuvanshi allegedly lured her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, to Guwahati, Assam, under the guise of visiting the Kamakhya Devi temple, but her true intention was far more sinister.
According to police investigations, Sonam led Raja from Guwahati to Sohra (Cherrapunjee) in Shillong, Meghalaya, under the pretense of a trekking expedition. There, she handed him over to contract killers, identified as Akash Rajput, Vishal alias Vicky Thakur, and Anand Kurmi. Raja was murdered on May 23rd, and his body was discovered in a gorge on June 2nd.
Dubbed “Operation Honeymoon” by Meghalaya police, the investigation revealed that Sonam allegedly never allowed Raja to touch her after their marriage, claiming she had taken a vow to the Kamakhya Devi and they could only be intimate after visiting the temple. This allowed her to manipulate Raja and execute her plan, allegedly hatched with her lover, Raj Kushwaha. Police found photos of Raja praying at the Kamakhya temple, marking the beginning of the deadly conspiracy.
Investigators suspect Sonam deliberately excluded herself from these photos, raising further suspicion. She then exploited Raja’s love for trekking to lure him to a secluded area in Sohra where the contract killers awaited.
The investigation uncovered a Guwahati connection to the contract killers. The three men stayed at Anand Lodge in Guwahati on May 19th, posing as students and providing identification. The lodge manager confirmed that the men, claiming to be from Indore, abruptly left the lodge on May 20th.
Further investigation revealed that Sonam and Raja last stayed at Hotel Manha in Sohra, Cherrapunjee on May 22nd. Unable to secure a room, they requested the hotel staff to keep their luggage, promising to return later. They never did. Hotel staff handed over the luggage to the police, who seized it as evidence, along with CCTV footage from the hotel.
Police have gathered substantial evidence, including 42 CCTV footages, a blood-stained jacket, Sonam’s raincoat, and the murder weapon found near Guwahati Railway Station. DIG Davis N R Marak stated that Sonam confessed to conspiring with her lover, Raj Kushwaha, in the murder. However, both Sonam and Raj are accusing each other of being the mastermind behind the crime. After the murder, Sonam allegedly posted “Together for seven lifetimes” on Raja’s social media accounts to mislead investigators.
Raja’s brother, Sachin, accused Sonam of exploiting Raja’s passion for trekking and plotting the murder inspired by the Bollywood film “Humraaz”. Sonam’s brother, Govind, has demanded the death penalty for his sister and pledged to fight for justice alongside Raja’s family. The investigation is ongoing as police work to piece together the full extent of the conspiracy and bring all those involved to justice.
