**”She the People” Founder Sues Tyler Perry and Netflix Over New Comedy Series**
Oakland, CA – Aimee Allison, founder and president of the non-profit organization “She the People,” has filed a lawsuit against Tyler Perry, Netflix, and actress Terri J. Vaughn alleging copyright infringement related to Perry’s new Netflix comedy series, also titled “She the People.”
The lawsuit, filed just before the show’s May 22nd release, claims the series infringes on the non-profit’s brand identity and goodwill, particularly in the realm of political advocacy for women of color. The suit also names Perry’s company, Tyler Vision, LLC, as a defendant.
Allison alleges that she had previously collaborated with Vaughn on a proposed docuseries based on the “She the People” concept. The lawsuit claims Perry’s new series, co-created with Niya Palmer, borrows heavily from the themes and structure of Allison’s original work. The Netflix show stars Vaughn as Antoinette Dunkerson, a Black woman navigating the challenges of being a lieutenant governor under a sexist boss.
“The Series echoes many of the same themes regarding Black women’s experiences in politics that Ms. Allison addresses through her activism under the SHE THE PEOPLE mark,” the lawsuit states.
Allison’s suit raises concerns about the potential misuse of her intellectual property given the similar themes and branding. Prior to the show’s release, Allison shared a cryptic Instagram post stating, “Ideas have value…Some of us are blessed with ideas—beautiful ones—that carry meaning, shape culture, and create lasting value.”
Neither Perry, Vaughn, nor Netflix have publicly commented on the lawsuit. “She the People” is currently ranking in Netflix’s Top 10 series. The case raises complex questions surrounding intellectual property rights and the fine line between inspiration and infringement in the entertainment industry.
