**Melapalayam Cattle Market Sees Brisk Trade Ahead of Bakrid**

**Tirunelveli, June 3, 2025** – The weekly cattle market in Melapalayam, Tamil Nadu, experienced a surge in activity today as traders and butchers from across southern districts and neighboring Kerala flocked to purchase livestock in preparation for the upcoming Bakrid festival on June 7th.

The market saw brisk sales, with over 2,500 sheep, 1,000 goats, and 200 bulls changing hands. Even roosters were in high demand, selling for between ₹500 and ₹1,200. Sheep prices ranged from ₹8,000 to ₹25,000, with well-grown animals weighing around 25 kg fetching the highest prices, particularly those with uniquely twisted horns.

“Demand for well-grown animals was heavy,” a trader said, “as Muslims will sacrifice sheep and bulls on Bakrid to share the meat with the poor and relatives.”
