**LOS ANGELES** – Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. is expected to be activated from the injured list as early as Tuesday when the team returns to New York for a six-game homestand, manager Aaron Boone announced Friday. Upon his return, Chisholm is slated to transition to third base.
Chisholm, sidelined since April 30 with an oblique strain, has been preparing for the move during his rehab assignment. He played third base for Double-A Somerset on Thursday, going 2-for-4 with a double and a walk. Boone emphasized the move provides flexibility, referencing Chisholm’s successful stint at third last season.
“I feel like I can always move him back [to second base], but right now, it makes some sense to get him some reps there,” Boone said.
Last year, after being acquired from the Miami Marlins, Chisholm willingly took on the third base role when incumbent second baseman Gleyber Torres declined a position change. Despite limited experience at the position, Chisholm excelled defensively, earning recognition as one of the league’s top third basemen.
This season, the team aims to keep DJ LeMahieu at second base, utilizing Chisholm as a left-handed hitting upgrade over the previous platoon of Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas at third.
In other injury news, right-hander Luis Gil took a significant step in his recovery from a lat injury, throwing a 15-pitch bullpen session on Friday. Boone cautioned that it will still be some time before the reigning AL Rookie of the Year makes his season debut.
Reliever Fernando Cruz is scheduled to throw a live bullpen session Saturday at Dodger Stadium and is expected to return from the injured list on Tuesday, provided he experiences no setbacks. Cruz was a key member of the Yankees bullpen before going on the IL with shoulder inflammation, boasting a 2.66 ERA and high strikeout rate.
