**Smokey’s Journey: A Family’s Support System Fuels Tennessee Pitcher Karlyn Pickens at WCWS**
**OKLAHOMA CITY** – Behind every great athlete is a strong support system, and for University of Tennessee softball star Karlyn Pickens, that foundation is her family. As Pickens and the No. 7 seed Lady Vols continue their Women’s College World Series run, her parents, Rebecca and Phillip, are a constant presence, providing encouragement and a much-needed escape from the pressures of the game.
Their commitment is embodied by “Smokey,” a stuffed animal purchased by Rebecca before the 2023 WCWS. The furry mascot became a symbol of the team’s journey, documented in a series of “Where’s Waldo?”-style photos at various stops along the road to Oklahoma City.
This year, Smokey’s reappearance marks a continuation of the tradition, and Rebecca’s social media chronicles aim to connect with fans and share the excitement of the WCWS experience.
Beyond the fun and games, the Pickens’ approach is rooted in providing Karlyn with a sense of normalcy and relief. They avoid discussing the game unless she initiates it, focusing instead on everyday topics and activities to help her unwind.
“Through all these years, I think it saved her from burnout,” Rebecca explained. “Knowing that she can come off the field, and if things didn’t go their way, she can come to her parents and we can support her.”
Their dedication to her well-being extends to celebrating her achievements, like breaking her own record for the fastest pitch in softball history, while reminding her of the impact she has on young fans.
As Pickens continues to dominate on the mound, her parents remain steadfast, offering unwavering support and a reminder that there’s always “more in the tank.” Their love and dedication serve as a vital source of strength for the rising softball star as she navigates the challenges and triumphs of the Women’s College World Series.
The No. 7 seed Tennessee Lady Vols face No. 9 seed UCLA on June 1 at 3 p.m. ET, in an elimination game broadcast on ABC.
