**Opposition to Demand Special Parliament Session Following Pahalgam Terror Attack**
**New Delhi – June 2, 2025** – Leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) are set to meet in the capital on Tuesday, June 3rd, to present a united front and formally request a Special Session of Parliament. The demand stems from the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and the ongoing security situation in the region.
The Opposition aims to address what they perceive as a lack of transparency regarding the government’s handling of the crisis, despite their support for international engagement aimed at highlighting Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. Seven multi-party delegations are currently touring the world with this goal.
A key point of contention is the alleged involvement of foreign governments in India’s foreign policy. Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj K. Jha has written to Prime Minister Modi, citing former US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of brokering peace between India and Pakistan, arguing that such interventions undermine India’s global standing and re-hyphenate India-Pakistan relations.
The Opposition intends for the Parliament session to take place after the delegations return next week, facilitating a comprehensive debate on the implications of the terror attack, ongoing conflict, civilian casualties, ceasefire announcements, and their impact on national security and foreign policy. “There are serious questions facing the nation about the terror attack, conflict, killing of civilians in Poonch, Uri and Rajouri, the ceasefire announcements, and the implications on our national security and foreign policy,” a top Opposition leader said.
While most Opposition parties are expected to support the demand, there may be some dissent. Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader Sharad Pawar has previously expressed reservations about the appropriateness of a Special Session, citing the sensitive nature of the issue and the need for confidentiality in the interest of national security.
A decision on how to formally request the session – whether through a joint letter or individual pleas from MPs – will be finalized during Tuesday’s meeting.
The government has yet to officially respond to the Opposition’s call for a Special Session. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held an all-party meeting on May 8th, but the Opposition feels it wasn’t sufficient to address the depth of their concerns.
