Sun Jun 01 22:20:00 UTC 2025: **Scheffler Seizes Memorial Lead with Late Birdie Barrage**
DUBLIN, Ohio – World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler surged to the top of the leaderboard at the Memorial Tournament on Saturday with a blistering finish, carding four birdies in his final five holes for a 4-under 68. He now sits at 8-under 208, holding a one-shot lead after Ben Griffin bogeyed the 18th, missing a short par putt.
Despite a challenging day at Muirfield Village, where the scoring average was nearly 74, Scheffler’s late heroics put him in a familiar position: leading after 54 holes. He has converted his last eight 54-hole leads into victories, including a win at the PGA Championship two weeks ago.
“I was definitely proud of the way I finished, and it was really challenging,” Scheffler said. “Through 13 holes, I felt like I was playing really good, and I was only even par. Just a hard course.”
Griffin, coming off his first PGA Tour win at Colonial, remains confident despite the setback. “Obviously, Scottie Scheffler’s the best player in the world, but No. 1 can be beat,” Griffin said. “I feel like he obviously can be beaten, and I’ve just got to keep the pedal down and make a lot of birdies because I know he’s going to, as well.”
Other contenders remain within striking distance, including Nick Taylor (+3), Jordan Spieth (+5) along with Ryder Cup Captain Keegan Bradley, and Sepp Straka (+5) all hoping to chase down the in-form Scheffler. However, Spieth acknowledged the difficulty of catching the world’s top player, stating, “The bummer for me is Scottie’s at 7 or 8 [under] and he just … you can’t count on him shooting even tomorrow. So it would take something special.”
Scheffler’s ability to consistently find a way to get it done in difficult conditions is a testiment to his ability as a golfer. As the final round approaches, all eyes will be on Scheffler to see if he can continue his dominant form and secure another victory.
