Sun Jun 01 16:15:31 UTC 2025: ## Piastri Dominates Spanish Grand Prix, Verstappen Penalized
**Barcelona, Spain** – Oscar Piastri of McLaren secured a dominant victory at the Spanish Grand Prix, extending his lead in the Formula One World Championship. The Australian driver led from pole position, finishing 2.4 seconds ahead of his teammate, Lando Norris, in a McLaren one-two finish. This marks Piastri’s fifth win of the season and McLaren’s seventh, putting him 10 points ahead of Norris in the championship standings.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the podium, capitalizing on a late-race pass on a struggling Max Verstappen. The Red Bull driver endured a difficult race, compounded by a controversial 10-second penalty assessed after the race for a collision with Mercedes’ George Russell. Verstappen, who finished fifth on the track, was ultimately demoted to 10th.
The incident with Russell was one of several for Verstappen, who also had contact with Leclerc earlier in the race. While Leclerc escaped further sanction for their encounter, Verstappen’s penalty significantly impacted his points haul.
Nico Hulkenberg delivered a strong performance for Sauber, finishing a surprising fifth ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes. Isack Hadjar secured seventh for Racing Bulls, while Pierre Gasly rounded out the top eight for Alpine.
Home favourite Fernando Alonso managed to score his first points of the season for Aston Martin.
The race saw a safety car period triggered by Kimi Antonelli’s retirement, prompting a flurry of pit stops. While McLaren executed a smooth double-stack pit stop, Verstappen’s team opted for hard tires, a decision the driver questioned.
The Formula One season continues with the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal on June 15.
