Mon Jun 02 02:20:00 UTC 2025: ## McCutchen Joins Clemente in Pirates History Despite Loss to Padres

**SAN DIEGO** – Andrew McCutchen etched his name deeper into Pittsburgh Pirates lore on Sunday, hitting his 240th home run as a Pirate, tying the legendary Roberto Clemente for third-most in franchise history. The milestone came during a 6-4 loss to the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

McCutchen blasted a curveball from Padres pitcher Randy Vásquez in the third inning to reach the historic mark. “Played long enough to have the opportunity,” McCutchen said with a smile.

Manager Don Kelly expressed awe, calling the achievement “iconic territory.” He lauded McCutchen’s impact both on and off the field, highlighting his leadership and mentorship of younger players. “Cutch is such a good calming presence,” said starting pitcher Andrew Heaney. “He knows when to say the right things. Obviously, he knows how to play the game right.”

The 38-year-old McCutchen, a five-time All-Star during his initial nine-year stint with the Pirates, returned to Pittsburgh in 2023 and has become a valuable presence as a designated hitter and clubhouse leader.

A young Padres fan who caught the historic home run ball met McCutchen after the game, receiving a signed ball and bat in exchange. Despite the individual accomplishment, McCutchen remained focused on the team’s performance, noting his own slow start to the home run count this season.

While the Pirates fell to the Padres, McCutchen’s achievement serves as a reminder of his enduring legacy in Pittsburgh and his contribution to the team’s past success and current development.
